In preparing for next week, when we go full-tilt on the summer of writing—with all-new reporting, interviews and the book club—I thought it would be helpful to bring back this great interview with Natalie Wexler from last year, about her book Beyond the Science of Reading: Connecting Literacy Instruction to the Science of Learning.
The reason Wexler wrote this book was to make some important and often missing connections between the science of reading and the science of learning. One of the biggest missed connections, she argues, is the importance of teaching writing explicitly and well.
We talk a lot in here about the importance of teaching writing not just as part of literacy and making stronger readers, but also how writing is so helpful to learning generally—but it’s often not treated that way.
