*Notes on the science of learning
“You write about topics that are of value to me and my teaching practice. Your writing work makes learning immediately more sticky for my students." – subscriber and educator Amy O.
Hi, I’m education journalist and author Holly Korbey, and I write and produce this newsletter all about the science of learning—the body of evidence from neuroscience, educational psychology and cognitive science that can help inform how teachers teach and how students learn. You may know or have heard about the science of reading; it has become quite well-known in the last few years as more schools have adopted evidence-based practices to help teach students to read—but there’s a related body of research that applies to all of learning, not just reading.
I’ve been an independent reporter for more than 15 years, and my work on teaching and learning has appeared in places like The 74, The Hechinger Report, KQED Mindshift, Edutopia, MIT Tech Review, U.S. News and World Report, The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, and many more. I’m also the author of one book, Building Better Citizens, about the grassroots civics education revival.
Over the years I’ve spent in schools and talking with educators, leaders, experts and scientists, I’ve come to understand that there’s a gap between what scientists know and what the public understands about learning. I created this newsletter to bridge that gap.
